what is the closest french equivalent to the english slang term dork? i realize that it has no true translation, but what would be the french word to use when affectionately calling someone a little dumb and kiddish?

I would say "pauvre type" but maybe it's not "hard" enough.

If you want to call some one a fool could use 'une andouille' (which is actually a sort of sausage)
If you want to be slightly stronger in your insult you could use 'un connard' which translates as a jerk or an {censored} or tw*t .

Well, it depends more on the way you say it than on what you actually say.

"t'es con" ou "t'es trop con" is not necessarily a true insult.
