magy, in all honesty, you don't actually have to speak French to get by in Montreal (ex: my family lived there for 12 years. In all that time, my parents only absorbed the words merci beaucoup, and they pronounced them messy bookoo...still do). But it will help, as all signs legally have to be in French (they are so strict about that). But if you are planning on seeing the sights (on a budget) and on using the public transport system, I suggest you practice becasue there are signs plastered above the drivers seats that say that French is the offical languiage of work in Quebec. Practicing how to ask for directions (if you get lost) would be a great asset. Bon voyage!!..hmf..magy wrote that in april, i must really look at the date..lol

Also "French Letter" an old fashioned term for condom and "French disease" meaning any sexually transmitted disease such as syphillis. You'd never guess the amount of anti-French sentiment in (proletarian) England now would you? :lol:

That sort of racism is still rampant in England.

Has been just as bad in America for decades. Look at the way their
'English' has replaced all the words derived from French which end
in -re', which retain the '-re' in real English, which they've replaced
with '-er'.

Metre=metre, center=center, theater=theatre ... Yuk!

Well... yeah, but no. Because if you ask an English person if they know where these words come from, very few of them would know that they're from French. So in the end, no real difference, is it?
