Prepositions are invariable words (or phrases) which show relation between other words in the sentence. The term "preposition" indicates that they stand before the word they govern.

Vous avez agi avec courage You acted with courage
Il est à table He is at the table
L'oiseau entra par la fenêtre The bird entered through the window

There are simple prepositions, which consist of one word, like avec with, or après after; and compound prepositions (or prepositional phrases) which consist of two or more words, like au delà de beyond, or par rapport à with respect to.

When a prepositon governs a verb, the verb takes the infinitive--except en, where the present participle is used.

Il faut manger pour vivre One must eat to live
Il s'instruit en s'amusant He improves his mind while having a good time

When a preposition has no object, it is understood as an adverb:

elle est dehors she is outside

There is a lot of nuance in the use of prepositions, much of which must be memorized or learned from experience. A good grammar will explain most of the uses for the major prepositions.

This seems like a good place to start online:

I hope this is helpful
