Bonjour tout le monde

I have a question concerning order of words. Would it be possible to say "Sorry I'm late" as "désolé je suis en retard" or would it be "je suis désolé que je suis en retard" ? I was just proof reading something for someone and wanted to be sure I'm telling them the correct sentence. I suggested the latter of the two, but the person thinks it's the first.

Thanks in advance,
Katya
