Hello,
I am new here.

S'y connaîte en -> means " to know a lot about"

Why is "y" being used in this phrase/idiom to indicate the "thing" about which you know.

se connaître = To know (from one's experience)

So is it because -> No knowledge is complete and still there is a lot to know "y" is being depticted.

If it was a completed action pehraps the idiom could have contained "en"

In short --> Can these idioms/phrases have a sensible meaning?
Question

se connaître = to know himself

Don't try to over analyse the whole thing, 'je m'y connais en mécanique' is just an expression, I am not even sure that y represents 'mécanique' in this case
