No 3 August 5th 1997. Opening ceremony.

Usually these ranges are used for basic training by our soldiers.
The electronic equipment used on the shooting ranges is the most modern one.
The conditions for fair play and exciting competitions are very good. Let’s hope for an excellent day in all respects.
I wish everybody good luck this first day of the 45th Military Pentathlon Military World Championship 1997.

Tommy Johansson Colonel

Meet Heidi Olsen - Denmark

She is LCpl and a very good pentathlete with the CISM record for women in Obstacle running, 2.24.1, from 1991 in Wiener Neustadt.

Heidi won the Nordic Cham-pionship in 1996.
Her individual Nordic record is 5.322,1 points from Wiener Neustadt 1996.

How is your present form?

I am here to make some good races in all the five disciplines.
I do not have the same high goals in the individual competition as I had earlier.
I don’t have enough time for training due to my present work. I intend to be a nurse and my studies take most of my time.

What do you hope for the Danish team?

We will do our best to get a bronze medal for the wometeam.
If everything works out well

it seems to be possible.

LCpl Heidi Olsen

What will you do in the obstacle-run?

I should be very happy for something like 2.24 - 2.25!

HARTMUT NIENABER Do You know him?

We asked him about his carrier and when he started with Military pentathlon. He tells us: "I started with track and field and came to "Bundeswehr" with good results. During an exercise I was told that I had excellent possibilities to be a pentathlete. I found a book where I could read about Pentathlon. I read it and then I went to Munich for tests. The book told me about Modern Pentathlon, - that did I already know ! In Munich I met a trainer who said "he can run and do obstacle running , but shooting is not his business. But we will try him!" When I look for pentathletes I start from running and throwing. Swimming is a short distance and can easily be learned. When I started I used 50 seconds for the 50 meters!

But I learned! And I reached the time of 26,5 sec, at that time - a CISM record.
I started in 1973 and had a lot of problems.
Sometimes only 9 shots hit the target. But the results improved! I remember that at one time I lost my swimsuit during the race! In 1974 I had learned my lessons and took my first Military World Championship."

StFW Hartmut Nienaber

How many did you achieve?

"Totally I took 10.
But from time to time I met problems.
In 1974 I had trouble with my weapon - something all pentathletes must learn to coupe with.
In my case it was very important.
Either I should win the championship or a Norwegian competitor would win.
I was the lucky one!"

Do you have favourites in this years championship?

"I think the Chinese and the Brasilians have teams that very well can win this
